From a business standpoint, the benefits to being energy efficient are endless. One main benefit is the lowering of energy bills. With oil and gas prices in constant flocculation, it is hard to predict exactly how much you are paying for electricity on a monthly basis. Depending on your usage, the time of year, the time of day, and numerous other factors, your monthly statement could range from hundreds to thousands. But with energy efficient practices such as using renewables, you may have little or no utility bills and could even be free of the grid! In fact, you may even receive a credit if you generate more electricity than you use!

One simple task everyone can do to reduce energy consumption is to replace incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs). CFLs can save $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb's lifetime and they generate 70 percent less heat, making them safer to operate.

Another benefit to energy efficiency is that it improves local economy by providing good jobs for the future. For example, solar energy demand has grown at about 25 percent per year over the past fifteen years, while demand for conventional utility grid energy typically grows 0 to 2 percent per year. Based on this, it is clear that more and more people are learning that the best way to improve local standards of living is to invest in yourself by generating your own energy rather than relying on the grid.

A related benefit to improving local economy is that the government provides incentives to purchasing renewable forms of energy. The City of Cleveland, for example, in cooperation with the Cuyahoga County Auditor's Office, provides partial tax abatement for properties built to the Cleveland Green Building Standard. Grants for such homes can cover costs resulting in 10 to 50 percent reduction in utility costs.

Since the government is spending Stimulus money on renewable energy, it is up to the people to make sure the government's money (A.K.A. our money) doesn't go to waste.

Here are some more examples of the benefits of renewable energy from a global perspective: it improves health, it raises property value, it turns waste into power, it fulfills a patriotic duty to not fund enemies, it saves animals, it conserves water, and it helps future generations live sustainably.
